Best Choices for Dog Food

The physiological needs of dogs places great emphasis on what they eat. Dogs need fats, carbohydrates, proteins,, minerals, vitamins and water just as humans do in order to grow an dbe healthy. Choosing the correct type of food for your dog is essential in providing a well-balanced diet that provides all the right nutrients.

The first most important factor to remember is that dogs go through different stages in their lives, just as we do. Babies and toddlers have different nutritional requirements to teenagers or adult. The same theory applies to dogs. Puppies have different dietry needs to adult dogs. It is important to rememeber this as dog food products are targeted towards the age and the size of the dog.

Secondly, dog food products come in three different categories.

  • Moist Food - these are made up of 60-80% water and contain a lot of colour enhancers.
  • Semi-Moist Food - These contain a high level of sugar as well as colour enhancers
  • Dry Products - These are made of grains, meat, meat by products, fats, minerals and only 10% water.

Dry dog food products are clearly more superior to other dog food products.

There are many different dry food products (pellets) on the market today, so which one is the best for your dog? Natural products or products recommended and supplied by your vet contain a higher nutritional value than the slightly cheaper products sold in the supermarkets.

Although these products may be slightly more expensive, they contain the correct balance of food and lack many of the artificial additives found in other products that cause digestion problems or other types of infections. So although the products might cost a bit more, your dog actually eats less of it because it's nutritional demands are being met. Therefor the cost pretty much equal themselves out.
